Climate Change Adaptation & Community Resilience
Building Capacity of Communities to Thrive in the Wake of Climate Change Impacts

Adaptation and resilience planning – Achieving community resilience and the ability to adapt to a changing climate requires comprehensive planning and knowledge management, involving a diversity of stakeholders from public and private sectors, civil society, and other stakeholders from local, regional, national and international organizations. We facilitate an inclusive planning process that addresses the unique needs of women and girls, as well as other disproportionately affected groups in developing equitable adaptation and resilience solutions. Our strategic development planning process is tailored to the specific regions and ecosystems we support, whether it be developing a road map for effective telecommunication systems, planting drought-resistant crops, creating early warning systems for natural disasters, or establishing business operations and government policies.

Geospatial risk analysis – Our GIS analysts produce interactive and static mapping analyses by geographic region that illustrate climate change risks to critical infrastructure, communities, and ecosystems to aide in developing strategies for risk mitigation. Through mapping and analysis of weather, demographic, and environmental data, we identify climate change risk hot spots and develop risk ranking framework that inform the development of infrastructure enforcement and protective measures.

Ecosystem-based adaptation – We study ecosystem health and resilience as part of the overall strategy for climate change adaptation such as a wetland’s ability to mitigate floods and droughts or a coral reef’s ability to protect coastlines. We incorporate climate justice, governance, gender, Indigenous and local knowledge, and communications into project planning efforts. We assess climate risks and evaluate benefits, costs, and impacts of potential ecosystem-based adaptation approaches.

Natural disaster planning and wildfire management – With the increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events and natural disasters, advanced planning and preparation can help mitigate the impacts to communities. We support the development of disaster management policies, programs, plans and evaluation procedures, taking into account the provision of goods. We also provide strategic communications and guidance on decision-making within disaster governance frameworks. For wildfire management specifically, we design early wildfire detection systems that enables faster containment and minimizes impacts to critical forest resources and nearby communities.
